La version originale de "Mama told me not to come" a été celle d'Eric Burdon en 1966, puis le titre a été repris par P.J. Proby, l'année suivante, avant que son compositeur Randy Newman ne se décide à l'enregistrer en 1970.
La version française "Maman viens me chercher" est interprétée par Patrick Topaloff
En néerlandais, "Mama zei nog: ga nou gauw" est chantée par Jan Rot alorsd qu'en finnois, "Äiti kielsi" est interprété par Mari Rantasila.
En allemand, "Mama sagt sie bleibt daheim" est chanté par Heli Deinboek alors que" Das war so doch nicht geplant" est interprété par Stefan Gwildi.
En suédois, le Marie Bergman Band interprète "Mama Sa'".
Parmi les reprises, notons celle de Three Dog Night, celle de Lou Rawls, celle d'Odetta, celle de Wilson Pickett ou celle de Tom Jones.
