Les paroles sont un compte-rendu assez fidèle de l'incident survenu lors de ce match.

Pour résumer la situation plus en détails, lors de la 9ème (et dernière) manche du match , et alors que les Yankees menaient 4-3 contre les Royals, le troisième base George Brett a frappé un home run à deux points, redonnant l'avantage aux Royals 5-4. Mais le manager des Yankees, Billy Martin (évoqué dans la chanson sous le surnom de "Tar baby Billy") porta réclamation auprès des arbitres concernant une quantité trop importante de goudron sur la batte de Brett, ce qui (après inspection) les conduisit à annuler les points. Et comme George était le troisième batteur éliminé et avec les Yankees (qui évoluaient à domicile et jouaient leurs manches en second) en tête, l'équipe de New York fut déclarée gagnante 3-4, mais les Royals portèrent réclamation auprès du président de la ligue américaine, Lee MacPhail, qui fit rejouer la fin du match à partir du moment où Brett avait marqué les deux points. C'est ainsi que le 18 août 1983 les Royals ont battu les Yankees dans le Bronx sur le score de 5 à 4.
