Un virage autant reggae que religieux dans la carrière de Dylan, alors tout juste converti au christianisme évangélique. Les paroles, assez enfantines, sont inspirées de la Genèse et le texte s'arrête brutalement à la fin, pour ne pas faire rimer "Lake" avec "Snake"… le serpent d'Adam et Ève symbolisant la chute de l'homme.

À noter la présence de Mark Knopfler et de Pick Withers (Dire Straits) à la guitare et à la batterie.
Une des chansons les plus populaires de Dylan mais qui a aussi de nombreux détracteurs, notamment les fans de la première heure qui lui ont reproché des textes trop chrétiens et un rapprochement trop politique avec le président de l'époque Jimmy Carter… qui fréquentait la même église.
