La chanson, à l'origine nommée "Riders in the sky (a cowboy legend)" puis "Riders in the sky" ou "(Ghost) riders in the sky", a été créée par Burl Ives. La version française, "Les cavaliers du ciel", a été chantée par Les Compagnons de la Chanson puis par Armand Mestral et, en 2000, par Bobby Hachey. Une autre version "Cow-boy Joe" a été interprété par le Grand Jojo.
En danois, Peter Belli a chanté "Den sorte truck".
En néerlandais, Gert Timmerman a interprété "Goudzoekers in de zon", alors que le duo Sha-Na a chanté "Ritme van de zomer" et qu'en flamand, le Grand Jojo a interprété "Cow-boy Joe".
En finnois, "Aaveratsastajat" a été interprété par Henry Theel ja Metro-tytöt, par Danny ou par Kari Tapio alors qu'"Hirvenmetsästys" était chanté par Pertti Metsärinne et que Solistiyhtye Suomi interprétait "Haavekatsastaja".
En allemand, "Geisterreiter" a été chanté par Gerhard Wendland, par Bruce Low, par Ralf Paulsen, par Peter Alexander ou par Franny& Sammy.
La version hongroise, "Cowboy-legenda" est interprétée par Záray Márta és Vámosi János.
En italien, "I cavalieri del cielo" a été chanté par Gino Latilla et par Mario del Monacop.
En portugais, "Cavaleiros do Céu" a été chanté par Nilo Sérgio e Garotas da Lua, par Ouro Negro ou par Carlo Gonzaga.
En espagnol, "Jinetes en el cielo" a été interprété par Raphael ou par Elder Barber.
La version japonaise est chantée par Kazuya Kosaka.
En tchèque, "Starý honec krav" a été interprété par Rudolf Cortés alors Žlutý pes ou Wabi ont chanté la même chanson mais avec le titre "Ďáblovo stádo".
La parodie "Borscht Riders in the Sky" est chantée par Mickey Katz.
