En 1964, cinq jeunes musiciens originaires de Salisbury (Wilsthire) forment un groupe d'abord nommé Dave Dee and the Bostons puis Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich en reprenant les surnoms de ses membres, David John Harman (Dave Dee), Trevor Leonard Ward-Davies (Dozy), John Dymond (Beaky), Michael Wilson (Mick) et Ian Frederick Stephen Amey (Tich).
Ancien policier, Dave Dee avait été le premier intervenant lors de l'accident de voiture qui, le 17 avril 1960, avait coûté la vie au rockeur Eddie Cochran et sérieusement blessé Gene Vincent.
Parmi les succès du groupe figurent "Hold Tight", "The Wreck of the Antoinette", "Hideaway", "Bend It", "Save Me", "Okay", "Zabadak""Last Night in Soho", "Touch me, touche me" et "The Legend of Xanadu".
La chanson "The legend of Xanadu" a été reprise par "The Fall"
En espagnol, "La leyenda de Xanadú" a été interprétée par Los Mustang et par Los Naufragos.
En yougoslave, Diego Varagic chante "Ksanadu"
