Les Weavers étaient un groupe New-yorkais de musique folk, basé au Greenwich Village, et composé, à l'origine, de Ronnie Gilbert, Lee Hays, Fred Hellerman et Pete Seeger.

Le premier enregistrement du "Hammer Song (If I had a hammer)" est celui réalisé en 1949 par le groupe The Weavers, fondé par Pete Seeger deux ans plus tôt. Mais c'est la version de Peter, Paul and Mary, en 1962, qui lui apportera la consécration et l'année suivante Trini Lopez en fera un succès mondial.
En français, le titre "Si j'avais un marteau" sera chanté par Claude François, par les Surfs, par les Clodettes, par Hugues Aufray, par C. Jérôme, par les Graffitis, par Chris Kersen, par Zora, par Amulette, par La Compagnie Picole, par les Betteraves, par Little Vicious Monkey, par Sweet Generation et par Eduardo.
Quant à Daniel Darc il va interpréter "Si j'avais une faucille" pour l'Internationale de la résistance.
En Italie, Coropercaso Ferrara ou Rita Pavone chanteront "Se avessi unmartello" tandis que Victor Jara chantera, en espagnol, "El martillo". Le duo Espera va chanter en esperanto "Se havus mi martelon". En catalan, Toni Gimenez chante "Si tingues un martell" et en portugais Sueli chante "Si eu tivesse un martello". Eumir Deodato a joué "Datemi un Martello" et Fresia Soto chantait "Si tuviera un martillo" tandis qu'Ilona Csàkovà chantait, en tchèque, "Bylo by to Kràsny". Et que Kladivo chantait Waldemar Matuška
En suédois, Gals and Pals a interprété "Om jag haft en hammare".
En néerlandais, "Oh, had ik een hamer" a été interprété par Rob de Nijs, que John Lamers chantait "Als ik een hamer had, alors que "Man met de hamer" était interprété par Jan Rot et que Cowboy Billie Boem chantait "Had ik maar een hamer".
"Had ik maar een hamer" est chanté par le chanteur belge Kapitein Winokio
En estonien, "Kui oleks mul haamer" a été interprété par Jaak Joala.
Une parodie, "If ida an' Anna" a été chantée par Dickie Goodman.
