En 1989, il se permet une petite escapade avec de jeunes musiciens d'influences punk et electro. Il écrit tout un album avec son ami Ollie Olsen qui, lui même, fait venir ses potes. ils se baptisent Max Q. Michael Hutchence déclare plus tard que: "Ollie n'était pas du genre à traîner avec des pop-stars et moi-même, je n'étais pas du genre à traîner avec des gens de leur style (punk). Ces mecs sont de bons musiciens qui n'ont pas eu de chance. La plupart d'entre eux n'ont jamais mis les pieds dans un studio. Ce sont des gars vraiment "underground" qui n'ont pas un sou. Parmi eux, il y en a même qui n'ont jamais pris l'avion. Ce qui les effrayait le plus, c'était de perdre leur statut "underground" si on les surprenait en train de jouer de la musique avec moi. Reste ce morceau qui connut une belle carrière aux Etats-unis (6ème) et en Australie mais qui fut ignoré sur le continent européen. En ingénierie aérospatiale, max Q est le point de pression dynamique maximale. C'est le point où la force aérodynamique sur un engin spatial est maximale au cours d'un vol atmosphérique.
