Paroles

Well, now, once upon a time on a fine summer's night
Orley went to the barn to see if things was all right
Well, he no sooner stepped inside the old barn door
Then a little bitty mouse popped up through the floor
He said, “[whistling], Orley, howdy doody do
If you feel like dancin', got some music for you.”

[whistling]

“Mr. Mouse,” Orley said, “That's a mighty fine tune
We'd oughta have a dance some time pretty soon.”
Just then Dingle Jolly come a walkin' through the door
Tootin' his harmonica like he'd never done before

Orley's pa heard the music and he went in the house
Got his old guitar and said, “Hit it, Mr. Mouse.”

Then the shuckin' machine said, “Sounds mighty sweet.”
And it shucked out a rhythm that couldn't be beat

Then the hired man shouted out a “Hi-diddle-diddle!”
And he reached in the feed box and hauled out his fiddle

The neighbors they heerd it for miles around
And they come to Orley's barn for the big hoe down
There's the Brownses and the Pownses and the Neeleys and the Lees
The Nixes and the Wickses and the Hickses and the Keyes
The kids come, too, there, Nellybelle and Sue
Ned, Jed, Ted, Fred, Willy, Tom, and Lou
It was do-si-do, promenade all
Bow to your corner an' twice around the hall

Then old Mr. Duck, with a quack, quack, quack
Said, “Step aside, folks, don't hold me back!”

Then the moo-cow mooed and strutted out of her stall
Bowed to the folks and went a-swingin' down the hall

The hens in the pen and the old white pig
Come out on the floor and scratched out a jig

Then the big red barn gave a heave and a jolt
Said, “Folks, I'm a-dancin' you better grab ahold!”

Oh, the music got better as the night went on
And it looked like they was gonna dance till dawn

But the old red barn sat down with a rumble
The hens started mopin' and the pig took a tumble
The moo-cow slipped and fell down a crack
And old Mr. Duck fell flat on his back
The neighbors took the kids and said, “Time to go to bed.”
The hired man's fiddle gave a squawk and went dead
The shuckin' machine busted down with a “Gunk!”
And then Orley's pa had to go shoot a skunk
Dingle got tired and went in the house
And the old cat come and chased away the mouse

Well, that finished the evening for our little boy friend
Just goes to show that all good things has to end
That's all
