La chanson "The King is dead" de l'Australien Tony Cole était passée quasiment inaperçue à sa sortie, plusieurs années après ses "succès" des années 60 que ce soit "Boomerang baby", en 1965, ou "Beat it" en 1967, encore que sa chanson de 1973, "The Hook" ait connu une certaine notoriété.
L'adaptation faite pour Johnny Hallyday, "Gabrielle" l'a faite découvrir quatre ans après sa sortie.
En espagnol, Johnny Hallyday va chanter "Gabriela".
Parmi les reprises françaises, notons celle de Gilbert Montagné, celle de Anggun, Tina Arena, Chimène Badi, Amel Bent, Amandine Bourgeois, Liane Foly, Irène Jacob, Jenifer, Joyce Jonathan, Claire Keim, Nolwenn Leroy, Hélène Ségara, Shy'm, Natasha St-Pier & Elisa Tovati, celle des Starhooters, celle de Pat Benesta, celle de Sébastien Laurent, celle de Christophe Maé, celle de Jean-Lou ou celle de Sylvie Vartan.
La dernière version, en octobre 2017, est celle de Thomas Dutronc pour l'album "On a tous en nous quelque chose de Johnny".
Pour les concerts des Vieilles Canailles (Johnny Hallyday, Eddy Mitchell & Jacques Dutronc), le titre sera régulièrement repris.
Comme curiosité notons l'interprétation de Nicolas Sarkozy.
Un autre titre de Tony Cole, décédé en 2001, "Magnificently mad" a été chanté en français, en 1973, par Johnny Hallyday sous le titre "L'amour violent".

Sympathique cette version d'origine, et largement meilleure que la version française la plus connue…
